Choosing a Point of Sale Terminal

Of all the parts that comprise a POS system, the most important device would probably be the main computer or the terminal itself. The computer is the brain of the system. Not only does it control all the other functions of the peripherals, it is also where all the other information, taken from all sorts of input devices, are stored.

When purchasing a Point of Sale Terminal, you should make sure that the computer on which all operations would hinge on would be strong enough to handle the work load. For smaller or start up businesses, a standard computer which cost, on the average between $500 and $800 should be sufficient. If your business is larger and your entire POS system is more complex, then you will need a stronger, more powerful computer.

Before you purchase your computer, ask your POS reseller what the program’s requirements are. Your existing PC may be able to adequately support all the program’s functions. In case the reseller advises you to upgrade your system, you might as well purchase the terminal that goes with the POS software. That way, you are sure that the computer, all the peripherals, as well as the computer program would all be compatible. Another reason why doing so is advised is that in the eventuality that the program malfunctions, tech support would be in a better position to guide you through the trouble shooting process, after all, they are more familiar with the hardware.

Other factors that need to be taken into consideration include the kind of business you are running; the competency of your staff (can they be easily trained, are they able to grasp concepts well, are they intimidated by high-tech gadgets); the size of your business establishment both in terms of customer base and physical area (find a POS terminal that will fit your office or the cashier’s counter) and naturally, your financial capability.

Take note, however, that the computers, depending mainly on the POS software that you will install, may need to be upgraded from time. As such, you should select a PC that that can easily be adjusted to suit the program’s requirements (thus, DOS-based computers may no longer be appropriate).

Apart from a heavy-duty computer and compatible peripherals (scanners, display systems, etc), you also need a strong yet steady supply of power (to avoid system damage due to fluctuating energy), and a POS software that can be loaded onto any operating system.
