Choosing A Point Of Sale Display
What Options Are Available?
There are two kinds of Point of Sale Displays available in the market. The Point of Sale Display which serve as advertising vehicles, and the POS display that is included in a sales terminal.
If you’re looking for a Point of Sale Display on which to advertise your wares, there are several options from which you can choose from. There are stand alone displays which can hold anything from batteries, to magazines to bars of chocolates and candies. These types are usually found near the counter or the cash register and their main purpose is to entertain the customer while he is waiting in line for his turn. These POS displays hold small and relatively reasonably priced items which make these goods ideal candidates for impulse purchases.
The other kind of Point of Sale Displays forms part of the actual Point of Sale System. These displays are called hardware peripherals and are usually sold together with all the other hardware (scanners, printers, etc) as part of a total POS package, although some may be purchased separately. It is, however, recommended that you purchase a display that is already part of a standard package as you can be assured that there won’t be any connectivity or compatibilities issues.
There are different kinds of displays. There are POS displays that are considered as “stand alone” units called Poles or Display Poles. These are not (obviously) connected to the main terminal. There are also those that are incorporated into the terminal itself, as is the case for hand held devices which are commonly used in restaurants.
Irregardless of form or connectivity a POS display exhibits, its main function is to show the customers information about the item that they are purchasing. The data is displayed either through an LCD or a green fluorescent display. The information either scrolls across or is flashed on these screens. Generally, POS display units can show up to 2 lines of text, and each line can fit 20 characters, enough space to display information on the price, product code and quantity of the item being purchased.
Pole Displays, especially those that are to be used in supermarkets and similar retail establishments, have adjustable viewing angles. They are generally quite easy to assemble and install. Some displays run on batteries: these do not need to be connected to a permanent power source in order for it to function. More high-tech displays come in ergonomically designed shapes and some manufacturers have even attached optical lenses to the device for easy viewing.
